New regulation on food contact materials

On August 14, a new Regulation on materials and objects in contact with food, including products intended for infants and children under the age of three to facilitate feeding and sucking, soothing and sleeping, as well as packaging for food and general use items has been published (“Official Gazette of RS” no. 73/2026).

The regulation enters into force on August 22, 2026. and repeals Articles 4-83 of the Regulation on conditions regarding the health fitness of items of general use that can be placed on market (Official Gazette of the SFRY, no. 26/83, 61/84, 56/86, 50/89, 18/91, 60/2019 – other regulation and 78/2019 – other regulation).

The new regulation harmonizes the regulations of the Republic of Serbia with the european ones regarding the scope and conditions of examination of packaging and items of general use.

The Regulation on the limit value of the total concentration level of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium in packaging (Official Gazette of the RS, no. 70/09) and the Regulation on the limits of the content of radionuclides in drinking water, foodstuffs, animal feed, medicines, general use items, construction materials and other goods put into circulation (Official Gazette of the RS, no. 36/18) remain in force.
